How is the blood cleansed of metabolic waste if the kidneys do not function?

dialysis must be doneHow is the blood cleansed of metabolic waste if the kidneys do not function?
Using dialysis, whereby the blood is passed through a semi-permeable membrane made of cellulose or a similar product which removes the impurities. Because the blood of someone with kidney failure

contains some minerals at very high levels, these leave the blood and flow into the dialysate through the membrane by diffusion. Excess fluid and substances in the blood pass through and are taken away in the dialysate until blood contains the correct balance of minerals once more. Simple answer, but that's all I know. How is the blood cleansed of metabolic waste if the kidneys do not function?
The liver... or dialysis?

Don't put any money on my answer...
